Safe Communities is a community-based program sponsored by the Stark County Sheriff's office. The program is comprised of local businesses, organizations, agencies and the public. The goal of this program is to work together to prevent traffic crashes.

The Stark County Sheriff's office reports that traffic accidents are the number one cause of death for people under the age of 40 and that traffic crash injuries are the most overlooked public health concern today. In 2011, there were 32 traffic related fatalities in the state of Ohio.

Members of the safe communities program work together to come up with solutions to prevent traffic accidents, which can result in injuries, death and high costs. They offer transportation safety programs and focus on ways to reduce injuries and health care costs.

Safe Communities offers several events throughout the year such as bike night, cruise-ins and teen driver programs. The Ohio Department of Public Safety, the Ohio Traffic Safety Office and the Stark County Sheriff's Office fund Safe Communities.

Coordinator Sharon George can be reached at the Stark County Sheriff's Office, located at 4500 Atlantic Boulevard in Canton. For more information on events and tips, call 330-430-3835.
