Jackson Local Schools will apply for a grant which will help pay 80 percent of the cost of each new bus that they purchase.

JACKSON TWP.: Board of Education Tuesday approved a resolution to apply for an Ohio Department of Education Diesel Emissions Reduction Grant in order to help with the purchase of new buses. If awarded, the grant would pay for 80 percent of the cost for each new bus with the schools being responsible for 20 percent.

The school board will apply for the grant through a purchasing program with other districts in Stark County.

"This grant helps organizations and businesses with large fleets of vehicles use newer, more efficient vehicles," Assistant Superintendent Barry Mason said.

Jackson school buses logged 1,311,276 miles last year for daily runs, athletic events and field trips. The district buys 112,199 gallons of diesel fuel each year with each bus averaging six to nine miles per gallon.

Mason said that the district hopes to know by early March if the grant will be awarded. Once that happens, the district can go forward and decide how many buses will be needed.
